Apple turnovers

The sound of apples, cinnamon  and puff pastry is very appealing, so apple turnovers was definitely something I wanted to try out.

  • Makes: 7-8
  • Prep time: 15 mins
  • Baking time: 15-20 mins
What you will need:

3 apples, peeled, cored and cut into cubes (I used granny smith)
1/2 cup brown sugar
Zest of half an orange
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 + 1/2 tbsp flour
2 sheets of thawed puff pastry
Egg wash (one egg beaten with 1 tbsp water/milk)
Brown sugar for the topping

How to make:

1) Melt the butter in a pot, then add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and orange zest and cook over medium heat until the apples soften a bit (around 5-10 minutes)

2) Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and cook for a further minute

3) Transfer the mixture on to a plate and leave to cool completely

4) Unfold each sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface, and roll out an extra inch on each side

5) Cut the sheet into 4 squares, and place a tablespoon of the mixture in the centre of the square, brushing the edges of the square with egg wash. Seal each square to form a triangle. Place a fork in some flour and crinkle the edges to make sure the triangle is completely sealed.

6) Place the turnovers onto a baking tray lined with a baking sheet, and brush the tops with the egg wash. Using a knife poke a hole in the turnover to allow the steam to escape. Sprinkle the surface of the turnover with brown sugar

7) Place in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes or until golden/brown

Fresh out of the oven

Just before I dug in and burnt my tongue!
You can serve with runny icing (icing sugar + water), or caramel sauce, or just as it is! This is a tasty and easy dessert to try out. If you are not a fan of oranges, decrease the zest in this recipe to less than half an orange. Most importantly, enjoy :)
