Baamya (okra sauce)

One of my favourite dishes is baamya. I love the okra and the tangy flavour!! I did not want to put this up, because I did not make this on my own like I normally do when I upload recipes, but my mum insisted I did because she said I was doing the main part, she was just assisting. Nonetheless, now we all can do this recipe on our own for next time, to enjoy this amazing meal inshAllah :)

Please note: We tried to measure everything so we can write up this recipe, so quantities are not super accurate.

  • Prep time: 45 mins
  • Cooking time: 30 mins

What you will need:

1/4 kg meat cubes
200g frozen okra
vegetable oil for frying
2 potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp black pepper
10 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
1/2 bunch of fresh coriander, washed and chopped without stalk
4 tbsp pomegranate syrup
Juice of 2 lemons
3 cups of boiling water

How to make:

1) Place the meat in a large pot on medium heat, cover and leave till cooked

2) Meanwhile, deep fry the okra in the vegetable oil until light brown and remove onto kitchen paper to dry. Set aside for later

3) Once the meat is cooked, add the potatoes, salt, cinnamon and black pepper and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes whilst covered

4) Add the garlic and coriander, mix for a few minutes until the coriander wilts

5) Add the pomegranate syrup and juice of the lemons, followed by the boiling water. Cover and leave for 15 minutes on medium heat

6) When the potato is nearly cooked (ensure not fully cooked), add the okra, mix, and leave for a further 5-10 minutes until the potato is fully cooked. If more water is needed, add at this stage

7) When the dish is done, serve with rice (if you need the recipe to make white rice please let me know) or bread

If you like okras, you will love this meal. It isn't difficult to make, and the result is worth every minutes. Enjoy :)

    1. We buy it from our local Arabic may find it in the world food section of your supermarket, or a local Asian/turkish/foreign store .. not sure if its sold in normal supermarkets or not
